THE MAN BEHIND CUSHTY TV
Born in 1971 in West London, Joe Smith comes from an English Romany gypsy family and spent the first decade of his life travelling the UK in a caravan. In the gypsy and travelling community, bare-knuckle fighting is a part of life, and it wasn't long before Joe took the sport up himself. Starting out at the age of 6, Joe was competing in paid fights at ten years old.
Now with six children, the family moved into a house in West London and it was there Joe discovered a love for golf that only strengthened with the encouragement of his grandfather. Following his grandfather's untimely death, Joe pursued a golfing career relentlessly and by the age of 16, he had won the London Junior Open. Though his victory was justly deserved, his background and success were met with resentment and discrimination within his club. Forced to leave, Joe's confidence took a nose dive, and he turned his back on golf for bare-knuckle fighting and crime.
